Cold Years – Northern Blue
Release Date: 2nd March 2018
Formed back in 2014 as a personal project for frontman Ross Gordon, Scottish alt-rockers Cold Years have already developed themselves incredibly. Now with a four-piece line-up and two successful EP’s under their belts, the group prepare for the release of their latest four track EP ‘Northern Blue’.
Inspired by a range of blues, rock n’ roll, punk and Americana, their signature sound emerges in the form of relatable and down-to-earth bluecollar rock anthems, playing homage to the great Bruce Springsteen; who first catapulted this definitive sound into the ears of the masses. Following their previous EP’s ‘Mile Marker’ and ‘Death Chasers’, the quartet continue to produce their own infectious spin on contemporary Americana from the industrial Scotland they call home.
They provide incredibly dynamic melodies in debut single ‘Miss You To Death’, which features echoing guitars and full-bodied choruses that make you want to turn the volume up. It is packed with raw emotion and lively instrumental shifts that grasps your attention from the get-go.
It would be easy to frequently mistake Gordon’s vocals for that of The Gaslight Anthem’s very own Brian Fallon, particularly when listening to ‘What I Lost’. The track incorporates slick guitar melodies which then turns into a rock n’ roll inspired solo.
They bring the EP to a close with ‘Final Call’, which encapsulates a whimsical marriage of steady guitar and vocals for a majority of the track. It takes you away and provides a relaxing melody which builds up to an intense crescendo. When the full band does finally kick in, you’re already hooked. The final track really ends your emotional journey off well and leaves you warm and fuzzy inside.
The record is a collection of genuine melodies that comes across as incredibly easy to listen to. The four tracks that made it to the EP are each carefully constructed and it is clear a lot of care and energy has gone into crafting each one. Cold Years once again prove that their infectious sounds are a complete delight.
