Meet punk lads Pastimes. They’ve recently revealed their EP ‘Keep It On The Outside‘ as well as a new single – we caught up with the band to find out all about Pastimes…
Broken Arrow: For those who have never heard of you, could you tell us a little bit about Pastimes?
Pastimes: We’re a fast, loud punk band from Boston.
Broken Arrow: Which artists would you say have been your biggest musical influences in shaping your emo/punk sound?
Pastimes: We pull influences from all over the place, but out of all the music we listen to Transit and Such Gold have had the biggest influence on our sound.
Broken Arrow: You revealed EP ‘Keep It On The Outside’ this summer, what has the response been from fans?
Pastimes: Our fans really enjoy it and it’s awesome knowing all the songs are getting attention; there isn’t one track that’s the best, everyone has a different favorite song.
“Hemisphere is about keeping your true thoughts and feelings to yourself, and pushing others away from you when they try to understand…”
Broken Arrow: What was the recording process like for the EP? Did one person take the lead or was it a joint effort?
Pastimes: Our whole writing and recording process is collaborative, but we have a rough idea of where we want a song to go that helps keep the band on track. Since we share a lot of the same influences it’s easy for us to get the vibe of a song and write our parts accordingly. We had these songs basically finished before we recorded them, but in the process of recording you can find little things to change or mistakes that have to be addressed.
Broken Arrow: You revealed a new single ‘Hemisphere’ this summer – what’s the track all about?
Pastimes: “Hemisphere” is about keeping your true thoughts and feelings to yourself, and pushing others away from you when they try to understand. It’s the struggle of trying to keep yourself together while others are trying to help or hurt you.
“Expect a more punk/hardcore focused sound…”
Broken Arrow: What’s been your most surreal moment so far as a band?
Pastimes: Getting the opportunity to tour and meet bands from across the country and world, and knowing people enjoy the songs we wrote in a basement. We never thought we’d even play a show so this whole experience has been surreal.
Broken Arrow: Do you have any interesting hobbies outside of music?
Pastimes: We’re all below average at skating and some of us spend too much time playing video games. Any other time we have is taken up with playing music or working.
Broken Arrow: Your drummer Jericho sadly departed the band in August and you’ve said you’re going to take a new approach – what can we expect and when?
Pastimes: Expect a more punk/hardcore focused sound that’s a lot more aggressive and technical while still keeping the emo qualities from our previous releases. We’re going to keep grinding away on these new songs and hopefully have some new jams out by early 2018. Maybe some shows between then and now, but for now it’s a lot of writing.
