“I believe that anything that happens with you, good or bad, you deserve…”
Not long after signing with Sumerian Records, Slaughter To Prevail have finally released their much anticipated debut album ‘Misery Sermon‘. We caught up with vocalist Alex Shikolai to talk idols, stage nerves and the band’s debut album…
Broken Arrow: For those who have never heard of you, could you give us a little bit of background on Slaughter To Prevail?
Alex: I have my own channel on YouTube which already has 17,000,000 views. I have never advertised it and was not asked to do it. People like my creativity. Thanks to my channel, I found Jack Simmons from Britain who contacted me. He offered me a cooperation. We decided to make a small internet project that turned into Slaughter To Prevail.
Broken Arrow: You combine extreme metal, deathcore and intense vocals; which bands/artists were you all influenced by growing up?
Alex: SlipKnot, Suicide Silence, Oceano, Bring Me The Horizon, Behemoth, Ingested, Suffokate, Impending Doom, Carnifex and many other bands from the period of 2002-2008.
Broken Arrow: You did a full Europe/Russian tour when you’d only released two songs – how did it feel being given that opportunity?
Alex: I always stay calm in any situation in life. I believe that anything that happens with you, good or bad, you deserve. I have goals that I want to achieve. But I was full of joy going on tour!
“I want to turn the music world upside down, make a huge contribution…”
Broken Arrow: Do you feel that your confidence performing live has grown a lot in that time?
Alex: Absolutely. But my confidence depends on how the rest of the band members play on stage. I am always nervous before the performance and worry during the show if someone will make an error.
Broken Arrow: You formed back in 2014 and have achieved so much in that time; touring, signing with Sumerian Records and you’re now releasing your debut full length. What has your most surreal experience been so far?
Alex: These all are surreal events and I want to turn the music world upside down, make a huge contribution. I have a big soul which burns only for one thing-it’s music. And I want our band to be heard all over the world.
Broken Arrow: You’ve shared stages with the likes of Acrania, Oceano, Carnifex and Cannibal Corpse. Who’s on your bucket list of bands to support?
Alex: I really want to share the stage with SlipKnot, Slayer, Behemoth, Gojira and Bring Me The Horizon.
Broken Arrow: Your debut album ‘Misery Sermon’ has just been released. What has the response been like so far?
Alex: Different feedbacks, but it’s ok. Some believe that we have released the best album, some think the album is full of shit. For me, the most important thing is to make noise. Like the album? Ok! Did not like the album? Still good.
“…we have huge plans with our label, Sumerian Records…”
Broken Arrow: What was the recording process like for ‘Misery Sermon’? Did one person take the lead or was it a joint effort?
Alex: Jack and me composed the music online with the help of social networks. Thanks to the 21st century for the high technologies!
Broken Arrow: Have you been announced for any festivals this year?
Alex: We have only announced the headline tour in America but we have huge plans with our label, Sumerian Records.
Broken Arrow: Lastly, what can we expect from you guys in 2017?
Alex: The Truth. Music. Hate.
