Our last update was on the Dstrkt 5 announcement for Boomtown which was well over a month ago, since then the festival has announced three more districts for the festival. Here is the latest on Boomtown 2017
One of the most recent districts to be announced in Boomtown’s bumper pack of line-ups is the much loved Mayfair. With a backdrop of Vintage Remix, Funk & Soul and Electro Swing, this highly theatrical district brings characters, costumes and ultimate fun to the forefront; whilst at the same time putting consumerism and capitalism under the microscope through the multitude of interactive street venues, walkabout characters and immersive theatre.
Acts representing the Mayfair music genres on the Town Centre include; independent French producer Wax Tailor, festival favourites 10-piece live outfit Smerins Anti-Social Club, Sam & The Womp’s trumpet and vocal Balkan electronica and Bordeaux beatmakers Smokey Joe & The Kid with their infectious hip hop loops.
Mixing 1940s jazz with hip hop, drum & bass, house and techno, The Ballroom presents a glittering extravaganza courtesy of Charleston inspired electro from Alice Francis bringing Romania to Hampshire. Future Funk duo LMZG (Lamuzgueule) taking the crowd through a history of vintage sounds and Paris/New York duo GinkGoa take a modern slant on Electroswing. Bristol boys The Allergies deliver ‘vintage sounds reshaped for the dancefloor’ whilst Smoove and Turrell’s Northern Funk encompasses soul, hip hop and jazz.
Twisted cabaret and swinging steampunk await any that stroll past The Bandstand, where the most colourful acts go to shine. Find there the fantastically barmy Hallouminati mixing ragga punk with traditional Greek sounds, Gypsy Unit bulking up basslines with infectious string sections and ska punk Londoners Imperial Leisure exciting the feet.
The long-standing street venue, Park Hotel is the ultimate playground with an almighty Soca takeover on the cards, courtesy of Jus Now, Dub Boy, Atki2 and AAA Badboy. Crowd participation at its finest, Laid Blak will be getting the crowd to go down low whilst Eva Lazarus and The Afronaughts bring three part harmonies to jungle, garage, hip hop and everything in between. The Mayfair Street Party will be taking swing to the streets with Scottish collective, Electrikal Sound System supplying their mega rig fresh from Thursday’s Sector 6 opening. Expect sets from Dutty Moonshine, Big Swing Sound ft Hypeman Sage and C@ In The H@ to name a few. Down the shimmering side streets and The Bank’s doors are open for all to discover where money goes to lie before gazing down from the Sky Bar with a glass of champagne.
Boomtown’s carnival inspired district, Barrio Loco presents a cornucopia of global culture with a musical soundtrack perfectly complementing the vibrancy of its interweaving streets! Taking the best in alternative bass, no part of the underground culture is left behind; from house to techno, funky to bashment, trance to soca, everything is celebrated in this landscape of colour! As well as being home to some of the most influential artists in the UK’s party scene, Bassline Circus will be filling this district with a multi-dimensional theatrical experience to provide all who through with a fully immersive experience.
Home to every facet of house and techno, the main stage for Barrio Loco, Vamos, celebrates global dance culture spearheaded by house/techno innovators, Ben UFO, Mr Scruff & Jay Orbison collaborating on an epic five and a half hour back to back session, Legendary Detroit techno DJ Carl Craig will be blending jazz and soul selections Classics are on the cards with respected techno producer Dave Clarke and Booka Shade will be driving footwork from front to back with their infectiously melodic minimal house music. House Gospel Choir’s unique take on old school classics performed by a full gospel choir takes funky house, garage and bass sounds to new heights in what promises to be an unmissable set. Taking some of the best in underground electronica to the masses, BBC Radio 1/1Xtra DJ Monki will be shelling out bangers, Dusky’s classical inspired techno takes production to a mesmerising level and duo Solardo’s explosive sets guarantee energy.
Round the corner in this district’s other main stage, Poco Loco, showcases the incredible versatility of live hip hop with a kaleidoscope of unique artists; headlined by newcomer Loyle Carner, whose ‘sensitive and eloquent’ hip hop invites intimacy in the largest of crowds, A J Tracey’s seamlessly intricate flow is delivered over rock inspired trap music and Jurassic 5 legend Chali 2na playing alongside renowned turntablist Krafty Kuts for a packed set of classic hip-hop. Straddling grime and bashment Donae’o’s vocals over back-bending beats supplies carnival vibes, and fresh from grime collective The Square, Elf Kid’s rhymes are relentless. Amy Becker’s fierce production has unequivocally secured her on the map of those to watch and Eva Lazarus, a name almost synonymous with Boomtown, presents her highly anticipated EP alongside The Afronaughts; expect big hair, big harmonies and big vibes. Chris Munky spins everything from trip hop to soul with MC Inja leaving no genre unturned.
Never far from the party, relentless energy from the Bassline Circus crew will be delighting passers-by with mind-boggling stunts fitting of an urban playground. Raised eyes will find breathtaking parkour, street dance and breakdancing showcasing the diverse range of cultural influences on offer throughout the district.
Never ones to shy away from an innovative set build Boomtowns Chapter 9: Behind the Mask, will welcome a new mega stage for all in attendance. After dropping the bombshell of the demise of Bang Hai Palace at the end of last year’s event, the ever ambitious festival have just released news of the freshly rebuilt, Bang Hai Towers. A completely remodelled and redesigned centrepiece for the Downtown area of the festival, which has been mysteriously ‘donated’ to the city by the prolific corporation, Bang Hai Industries, this all new communications complex is a fitting substitute for the once beloved Palace, with sound systems stacked to the sky ready to host world leaders in bass, garage, grime and drum & bass.
Kicking off proceedings on the Friday evening, London label and grime pioneers Butterz present a massive takeover with; Elijah & Skilliam whose bassline inspired grime is mixed to perfection; Swindle will be bringing his signature slow-burning build-ups resulting in the most devastating drops. One grime’s most recognisable collectives, Heartless Crew will be shelling out classics from start to finish and DJ Luck & MC Neat will be bringing old school garage to the stage.
Saturday will see a first time ever, world exclusive three-hour set, courtesy of beat heavy Bristol duo My Nu Leng playing alongside TQD made up of three of the most exciting DJ’s on the scene right now: Royal-T x DJ Q x Flava D. An inspiring set for dubstep fans everywhere comes in the form of the legendary Rusko in a rare UK appearance. Dance heavy bass music is in supply from festival favourite Redlight and funky house courtesy of Murder He Wrote playing B2B with Roska. Sunday goes back to the roots with a massive drum & bass takeover from Exit Records, one of the most forward thinking labels in the genre, with devastating sets from D-Bridge, Skeptical, Alix Perez, Fracture and SP: MC.
After three solid months of stage releases, over 500 acts announced across nearly 30 stages and nine districts, a huge spectrum of musical genres and workshops have been revealed. The next announcement to watch out for from this totally unique festival will be about where the storyline will take it’s adventurous festival attendees in Chapter 9: Behind The Mask!
