Hailing from the Czech Republic. black metal band Root have been making music together since the late 80s; being one of the original pre-second-wave black metal bands. The new studio album ‘Kärgeräs – Return From Oblivion is Root’s tenth studio album.

Kicking this album off are ‘Life of Demon and ‘Osculum Infame‘. These remind me of when I first listened to Darkthrone and Bathory but it has Root’s own style added in, which consists of clean vocals compared to traditional black metal which has heavy, growly vocals.

With the next few songs, you can tell they have magic, paganism and satanist lyrical themes. They have this unique style of dark metal which I’ve never heard before.

Black Iris‘ really is the standout track for me; it has the sheer brutality of this genre of metal with unique clean vocals and hymns, really making me want to go to a show of theirs and hear this one live. ‘Moment Of Hope and ‘The Key To The Empty Room include more chilled riffs with haunting vocals from lead singer Big Boss, making me feel like I am losing myself into this void.

New Empire and ‘Up To The Down are also killer tracks. The album closer ‘Do You Think It Is The End‘ is the perfect track to finish the album on; like the end to a fantastic theater show.

I have been a black metal fan for a while, but until listening to this album, I had never heard of these guys. It’s safe to say they blew me away with this unique take on the genre. This album is definitely worth checking out.
